Arestin

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a condition involving an inflammatory infection of the gums by oral bacteria. The condition is progressive and can lead to bone destruction and, ultimately, the loss of teeth.

Stages of Gum Disease

Gum disease progresses in stages: gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is where plaque accumulates at the gum line, leading to inflammation.

 Symptoms of Gingivitis

  • Red and tender gums
  • Bleeding gums
  • Sore gums

Although gingivitis is unpleasant, it can be reversed. Normally, gingivitis is reversible if the patient begins practicing proper oral hygiene again. This means brushing at least twice a day and flossing the teeth at least once daily.

Periodontitis

If gingivitis is not reversed, it can eventually develop into a more serious form of gum disease called periodontitis. At this stage, the connective tissue and bone supporting the teeth are irreversibly damaged. Pockets begin forming under the gum line, trapping food particles and plaque.

Although periodontitis is an irreversible condition, it can normally be halted when the patient undergoes special treatment, along with a proper oral hygiene routine at home.

Causes of Gum Disease

The main cause of gum disease is the accumulation of plaque. Plaque is a sticky film of material that adheres to the teeth. It contains bacteria that release acidic substances that damage gum tissue, leading to the chronic, inflammatory condition known as gum disease.

Risk factors of developing gum disease include:

  • Using tobacco products
  • Crooked or crowded teeth that are difficult to clean
  • The use of certain medications
  • Diabetes
  • Dental appliances that fit poorly
  • Compromised immune system

Why Is Treating Gum Disease Important?

Treating gum disease is critical because, as mentioned earlier, it can progress to the point that it becomes irreversible and threatens the loss of the teeth.

What Is Arestin?

Arestin is the brand name of a medication called minocycline hydrochloride. This is an antibiotic that destroys the oral bacteria that cause gum disease.

If you are being treated for gum disease, your dentist would place Arestin directly into areas of infection, commonly known as gum pockets. This is where your gums have receded away from your teeth.

Dentists normally use Arestin immediately after a scaling and root planing procedure. This treatment is commonly performed to remove plaque and bacteria under the gumline where it is difficult to brush and floss.

Once your dentist has treated you with Arestin, it begins working immediately at the source of infection, continuing to work long after your appointment has ended.

Arestin combats inflammation and infection for 30 days. It has been found to offer better results than a simple scaling and root planing procedure for up to 90 days.
